Types of Voluteering

Continuous: Continuous volunteering is face-to-face within an organization. There is usually a position you fill with a set of tasks to complete. Although amount of time may vary, there is usually a regular schedule. This type of volunteering can include coaching, tutoring, working at a Food bank, being a volunteer firefighter, reading at a library etc.

Episodic & Expertise Based: These positions are usually time specific volunteering. You may have a position but your involvement is time limited. Examples of episodic volunteering are helping out at a fundraiser, community celebration or special event. Included in episodic volunteering is volunteering your expertise. By example you may a a lawyer by profession and make yourself available to provide legal advice to a local group dealing with a legal issue or you may be a facilitator who volunteers to deliver a workshop to support a local conference.

Family: Family volunteering is providing support as a family unit including at least one adult and one or more children/youth. A. Family can be a single parent with their children, two parents with their kids, an Uncle with his nieces and nephews or even a grandparent with their grandkids…family can be a creative combination. Family volunteering opportunities can be to support a local event, raise money, fill a position as a unit etc. Some families work together at local fairs, walk dogs together at local animal shelters or even clean the ditches to keep the community clean. Family volunteering is a wonderful way to instill the value and culture of volunteerism in young people.

Virtual: With the advances in technology and social media, more and more people are becoming virtual volunteers. Virtual volunteering is online volunteering that can be done from an organization’s physical location or done online from home. Virtual volunteering could include such jobs as developing a web site of an organization, researching information and developing resources or coordinating and monitoring twitter and Facebook accounts for organizations. Virtual volunteering can also be done with organizations throughout the world.  Virtual volunteering can be an exiting way to connect with people all over the world and  volunteer from home.
